Make the Best Use of Water During This Central Florida Drought

The Central Florida landscape is looking drier than usual—and it’s not just because of this past winter’s brutal frosts. Spring has been stalled by drought conditions, with very little rainfall and rising temperatures. During this time, our two main concerns are water conservation and fire prevention.
Here’s how we can tackle both—without turning our yards into a desert wasteland.
Smart Ways to Use Water
A few small adjustments can make a big difference when it comes to conserving water:
- Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation
- Check your irrigation system for leaks or overspray
- Adjust sprinkler timers—your lawn may need less water than you think
- Consider letting some areas go slightly dormant rather than overwatering
Inside the home, simple habits like fixing dripping faucets and running full loads of dishes and laundry can also help reduce unnecessary water use.
Be Mindful of Fire
Dry conditions increase the risk of fire, especially around the home. A little prevention goes a long way:
- Clear dry leaves, pine needles, and debris away from your home’s perimeter
- Keep gutters and roofs free of buildup
- Avoid outdoor burning—even small debris piles can spread quickly
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and avoid parking hot vehicles on dry grass
Even something as routine as mowing the lawn can pose a risk if conditions are especially dry. It’s worth staying aware.
A Little Awareness Goes a Long Way
Florida’s rainy season will arrive soon enough, but in the meantime, being intentional about how we use water and maintain our properties helps protect not just our homes—but our entire community.
