Grill Safely This Summer: Tips for National Grilling Month

How to Grill Safely This Summer: National Grilling Month Tips for Homeowners
July is National Grilling Month — the perfect time to enjoy outdoor cooking with family and friends. But before you fire up the grill, make safety a top priority.
Grill Outdoors — Not in Garages or Overhangs
Always grill outdoors, never in enclosed spaces like garages or under overhangs. Keep grills at least 10 feet from your home or anything flammable. For gas grills, check hoses and connections for leaks using a soap-and-water solution — bubbles indicate a leak.
Create a Safe Zone and Stay Attentive
Never leave a grill unattended. Fires can start fast, so keep a close eye on both the flame and the food. Create a three-foot “safe zone” around the grill to keep children and pets away. Have a fire extinguisher or a box of baking soda nearby in case of grease fires. Never use water to put out a grill fire.
Clean the Grill and Handle Food Carefully
Clean your grill regularly to prevent grease buildup and flare-ups. Use long-handled tools to avoid burns and practice safe food handling: keep raw meat separate and use clean utensils and plates for cooked food.
Use a Thermometer for Safe Meat Temperatures
Ensure meat reaches safe internal temperatures: 165°F for poultry, 145°F for beef and pork.
Celebrate Summer with Safety and Flavor
Enjoy the season with good food and peace of mind. Grill smart, stay safe, and savor the summer!
